Snow Shoveling for Seniors

Each year, the “Snow-Shoveling for Seniors” program compiles a list of Park Ridge senior residents who might want a hand (at no cost!) during the coming snow season. Once the address list is compiled, we farm it out to local scouts and Park Ridge youth who might live nearby and we encourage them to walk over after each snow to clear sidewalks, a path to the door, or even just access to garbage cans.

It’s a win-win-win-win-win. Here’s how:

  • We look out for our elderly neighbors in Park Ridge.

  • Kids get a chance to be outside (away from electronic devices) getting exercise and learning the value of hard work.

  • Parents get quiet time...perhaps to prepare the hot chocolate for their deserving children.

  • Collectively, we become stronger as a community. Neighbors wave more and people recognize each other by name.

Some reminders about this program:

  1. It is a volunteer-based program; no payment is asked for or expected. In fact, we encourage no contact between our scouts & the residents. That said, a resident is always welcome to say thanks, give additional guidance, or offer a tip.

  2. There is no guarantee of service. As our volunteers are grade- and high-school age children, there is a chance that a request for support is unmet or that it does not reflect desired standards of workmanship. Participants are reminded that these volunteers have competing priorities such as school, sports/activities, distance, and parental approval. Moreover, there is a chance that no volunteers live near a particular resident. If a resident is in dire need of assistance, they are encouraged to call my personal cell phone (847-877-2583) and I will try to resolve the issue.

If you have any questions about this City-Wide service project, please contact Joseph Steinfels at jpsteinfels@yahoo.com or 847-877-2583.

Below is a list of 46 addresses from neighborhoods across our community. Each of these neighbors has asked for assistance clearing snow from their front paths or sidewalk during the coming snow season. Please find an address near your house & help out a neighbor all winter long!
