2019 Lenten Almsgiving

We are partnering with Catholic Extension for our Lenten Almsgiving Project to help St. Luke’s in Warren, Arkansas build a new Church, parish hall, and classrooms for religious education

St. Luke Catholic Church is located in Warren, a small rural community in Arkansas approximately 90 miles south of Little Rock. It has a predominantly Hispanic congregation and serves a large migrant worker population during peak agricultural seasons. Many of the parishioners have very limited resources and live below the poverty line. The 100 year old Church is in serious disrepair. The exterior and interior walls have major cracks and holes are visible in the ceiling. The heating and cooling system is unreliable and often does not function at all. A parishioner, who serves as a lector, described being able to see her breath while reading during the colder winter months.

Unfortunately, the building is in need of such major repairs that it is financially unfeasible to restore the building. T he Diocese of Little Rock has acquired the Bradley County Farmers’ Co-Op property located 1 mile from the current location of St. Luke Church. The property includes a retail store and an adjacent warehouse building. St. Luke’s Church plans to convert the acquired Co-Op buildings into a space suitable for a Church, a parish hall, and classrooms for religious education. St. Luke needs your help to continue to grow the Catholic Church in rural Arkansas. It is clear that with providing adequate facilities more programs can be offered to the parish community. This is how St. Luke's Church will continue to grow. Let’s build St. Luke's a new church!

Our Goal: $100,000

About Catholic Exchange

Catholic Extension builds churches and the Church in America’s poorest places. Since 1905, Chicago-based Catholic Extension has been building up and strengthening Catholic faith communities across America by providing funding and resources to poor churches to unleash the transformative power of faith. We raise funds to help these poor, forgotten and often isolated communities flourish.

  • We invest in buildings by supporting the construction and renovation of churches and church facilities.
  • We invest in leaders for the Church by providing education, training and support to seminarians, priests, sisters, deacons and lay leaders.
  • We invest in ministries by supporting pastoral, youth, young adult, campus and outreach ministries, Catholic schools, and religious education.

Catholic Extension is a papal society that is answering Pope Francis’ call to go out to America’s “peripheries.” Since its founding, Catholic Extension has distributed more than $1.2 billion in today’s dollars to dioceses that cannot support themselves. Catholic Extension supports all 6 dioceses on the island. We have been providing $100M in support there for 112-years, and built 1,400 churches throughout the island.
