Centennial Garden

Although Covid 19 has eliminated many of our favorite past times and routines, our St. Paul of the Cross Centennial Vegetable Garden continues to grow strong! This season our master gardener, Mike Polley, is leading his team of dedicated and seasoned gardeners through it all while adhering to the masks, gloves and social distancing rules required by the State of Illinois. Mike altered the procedures from years past to be compliant, while fulfilling the mission to feed the hungry who depend on our food pantry each month, fresh vegetables. Our clients are grateful for the fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, zucchini, potatoes, herbs, flowers, and more.

In previous years, the gardeners took turns distributing products from their monthly produce table on pantry mornings. It afforded them the opportunity to interact with the clients who would be enjoying the fruits of their labor. Our SPC gardeners know that it's not just about handing out vegetables, but about choice, dignity and a shared blessing. This year, that interaction has not been possible. Instead, the produce is harvested and put inside of the pre-packed grocery bags which are distributed by food pantry volunteers curbside.

I am thankful for the returning gardeners who said "yes" again this year, and who have understood and accommodated the changes and inconveniences. Gardening this year is only made possible by Mike Polley. The many hours of planning and time he spends in the garden overseeing the crops is endless. Mike's working knowledge of growing vegetables and willingness to take charge has allowed this ministry to flourish since 2011.

If you have never seen our parish vegetable garden, check it out! It's on the corner of Summit Ave. and Ridge Terrace, across the alley from the school.

Be well,
Adrienne Timm
Dir. Social Service Ministry
