Baptismal Font

From time to time someone would remark to me how beautiful our church looks! Ever since we did the painting and the re-decorating, the beauty of our church has been further enhanced. However, there is one piece that needs to be improved.

When we visit the old churches in Europe we notice the prominence given to the baptistery. In the mind of the Church and in our faith, baptism is the first sacrament that opens the doors to all the treasures of Christ. In many places such as Florence and Rome, the baptistery has a dedicated building. Unfortunately our baptismal font does not do justice to our tradition.

In addition there are some practical problems with our present font. It has been leaking and some of the water even found its way to the Holy Family Chapel. We need to fill it manually, as it is not connected to a water line. It is rather difficult to clean. The water is cold. When we baptize, the cold water shocks the babies and they scream. Besides, those who built the font told me that it was set up as a temporary measure under Fr Kinane. It has been in use for more than twenty years.

Today we have new technology that addresses these problems. We can have a font that will be filled automatically because it will be connected to a water line. The water will be purified by UV rays and it will be heated. As you can see from the rendering, we will build a font that will integrate many of the artistic elements of our church.

I am not writing this note to ask for money. The good news is that a generous parishioner family who wishes to be anonymous has given a donation sufficient to cover cost of the entire project. We are grateful to them and hold them in prayer.

We really do not know when the work will start. We hope to have the new baptismal font in place the latest by next Easter. It will be dedicated to all the babies that will be baptized in our parish.

God bless you all!
